Take the train from LARISA Train Station in Athens at 08:20 and travel to Kalambaka through beautiful Greek landscapes. Arrive in Kalambaka at 13:40, meet our driver outside the local train Station and be transferred to your hotel to check in and get ready for the Sunset Meteora Tour. The driver will be looking for you at +/- 16:00 to take you for the tour. After your tour, we will drop you off again at your hotel or in Kalambaka for a short walk.
Next morning at 09:00 join a comprehensive Panoramic Morning Meteora Tour or an Authentic Hiking Meteora Tour (your choice). For 4 hours you will have the chance to experience all the beauty of the unique phenomenon of Meteora and the Holy monasteries on top of the rock giants. After your morning Meteora activity we will transfer you back to your hotel to have lunch and prepare for your departure back to Athens. The train departs at 17:32 from Kalambaka and you will be in Athens at 22:30.

A well marked path in the rocks of Meteora

For real pleasure, combine walking and touring. The sight of the Meteora is a unique spectacle and experience, but walking on the well marked paths, is breathtaking. Experience and observe the local flora and fauna.

Step off the tourist trail and discover the little-known routes that most visitors do not get to see. On this half-day hiking trip, you follow the guide on a leisurely hike to the Grand Meteora Monastery. Along the way, you pass from the Ypapanti monastery and some of the smaller rock monasteries, and listen to fascinating commentary about the formation and history of this unique site.

When the leader calls: “let’s go hiking in Meteora” you follow him in the narrow path that leads into the valleys set on the foothill of the great rocks.
There are numerous hiking paths in the area, some are more difficult than others. The routes that we have chosen are not too difficult. You must wear the proper shoes and be careful where you step, other than that it is a great experience to become one with the nature.

“Go hiking in Meteora” then, and see this unique geological phenomenon walking. Experience a unique convergence of nature and spirituality unlike any other place in Greece. Discover and follow the paths of the monks. Hiking in Meteora gives you the opportunity to see the monasteries and landscape from a different perspective.
The views of the town of Kalampaka at the base of the rocks and the valley of Pineios river are stunning. Plus a visit to a monastery (Great Meteoron or Varlaam) is included.

Useful advice!

The best season for walking at Meteora is Spring and Autumn. If you are walking in the Summer, you will need to have a lot of water with you. You should avoid walking in the heat of the day (11.00 – 4.00 pm).
In the Winter you should also avoid areas that are very wet and slippery.
You should wear shoes that are correct for such sports.
Please respect the holiness of the site and maintain the proper behaviour.
Please keep the area clean of all forms of thrash.

Hiking Tour of Meteora

The hiking tour of Meteora is best possible way to experience this historic site and geological mystery. On this tour you will walk through paths less traveled by the masses, which only locals are able to guide you through. Follow the trails taken by the first hermits and monks to settle in Meteora in the 9th Century AD, enjoy views which most visitors do not get the opportunity to see!

We begin our trek at Doupiani rock, right under the remains of Pantokrator monastery. We continue through the imposing sandstone mountains and move to the north side of Meteora. There we visit the concealed monastery of Ypapanti and the remains of St. Dimitrious Monastery. While visiting these landmarks, you will hear the history, legends and dark tales associated with the area and each site as told by the locals.

Visit the Ypapanti monastery from the inside (it is open until October), and then the monasteries of Great Meteoron or Varlaam. After filling your soul and absorbing history, we begin the last leg of this one of a kind tour by taking the original paths monks used before more modern road construction began.

Difficulty level: Easy. We do suggest, though, that you are a generally active person to participate in this tour.

Take this morning tour, include the guided visit to Theopetra prehistoric cave, 4 km from Kalampaka and discover the ancient man made structure on earth, a stone wall dated back to 26,000 BC. Have the chance to see on the caves’ floor the petrified footprints of a 7 years old child that walked on the ashes 60,000 years ago.

Think back in time when the prehistoric child running inside the cave left his footprints for us to see them thousands of years later.

Meteora Half-day Tour from Kalampaka is the perfect way to explore the amazing Meteora Monasteries. It has since been a Christian sanctuary with a very complicated and rough history. 24 monasteries were built during its history, 6 remain to this day.

Starting at 08:45, observe the striking contrasts that make Athens a fascinating city. Your guide will take you to see the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympic Games of modern times were held in 1896 (short stop). Drive on, passing by the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Hadrian’s Arch, the Parliament and the memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library, and, Constitution Square (Syntagma). On the Acropolis, visit the Architectural Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: The Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and finally “the harmony between material and spirit”, the monument that “puts order in the mind”, the Parthenon. Continue and visit the place where at last the statues found a proper home and admire the wonders of the classical era at the new Acropolis museum.

Continue to a local traditional taverna and enjoy a Greek lunch.

After a tasteful lunch drive along the coastal road to the most Southern point of Attica, the Cape Sounion, where the white marble pillars of the Temple of Poseidon stand. On the way, you have a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf and the little islands offshore. After visiting the Temple of Poseidon, you have time to walk at leisure on the rocky promontory of Sounion and take photos of a beautiful sunset.
